The Importance of Strength Training

One thing that gets neglected in a lot of people's exercise regimes, is the importance of weight training. Believe it or not, it's not just the guys who wanna 'get big' that do weights; it's beneficial to all shapes and ages, regardless of your goal.

Strength can be achieved using weights or your own bodyweight; below is a list I have compiled of my top 6 benefits of strength training:

1. Everyday Activity

Following a strength programme, the goal is to add 2.5kg to the exercises every week; if you do this, over time you will become increasingly fitter and stronger. Daily tasks such as carrying the shopping, or picking up the baby will become much easier and a lesser effort.

2. Boosted Metabolism
The higher muscle percentage you have, the more calories you burn, even when resting; this accelerates the rate at which body fat decreases.Strength training has been known to increase the metabolism by up to 15%.

3. Solid Muscle Definition
Strength conditioning builds lean muscle, so once the layers of body fatare stripped away; you are left with a defined and toned physique. You may find you put on a few pounds following a strength programme, but despite this you will look slimmer; this is due to the fact that muscle is denser than fat.

4. Postural Correction
Strengthening the back and abdominals causes you to sit and stand straighter whilst improving balance and core stability. This not only alleviates back ache, but treats kyphosis posture (rounded shoulders) andcurvature of the lower spine (lordosis).

5. Protects bones and muscle mass
Weightloss via calorie restriction can lead to a reduction in bone density. Adding to this, after puberty we begin to lose 1% of bone and muscle mass per calendar year; strength training helps to reverse these effects and generate greater bone density.

6. Boosts fitness levels
Without hitting the treadmills for hours at a time, the heart rate will shoot up and if you are following a strength programme properly, it should leaveyou out of breath in the same way a run does. Chances are, if you don’t feel like you have worked hard, you haven’t!

Still not convinced??
